Valentino Red

This week we will focus on the wonderful combination of red, white, and blue, and I will try to forget that The Closet starts accepting fall consignments in just a few weeks. For The Closet, as well as anyone else in the business of fashion, the 4th of July signifies the end of summer and lots of 50% off tags. However, most people see the holiday as just the beginning, though for us it marks the fact that fall is only two months away. I don't want to depress all of you with this news since there is still plenty of time to enjoy your summer finds, but don't forget that early autumn looks are already arriving in stores, The Closet included (and we get our best pieces early!)
p.s. If you are looking for the perfect pair of flats to last you still September, I think these Valentino peep toes will do the job.

YSL 'Raspail' Tote
We just received a fabulous Yves Saint Laurent tote in black croc-printed patent leather. It is sooo nice and big, but so light. Come in and take a peek. The best of fall is yet to come!

All good Boston girls have a little wicker bag! From the authentic Nantucket basket to the Lambertson Truex mini tote pictured above, this piece will make your outfit most proper this summer.

We have one of
these and as i'm sure you know, they never go on sale...but they do at The Closet!

More Pucci!

Look at these colors! The fabric is fine silk jersey, a great classic print, Italian 46. I like that it has sleeves so you can really wear it any time, pair it with some dark brown slouchy boots and a cardigan for early fall or right now with a metallic gold sandal. Take me to Capri!

Just in: Chanel Bag!

Lovely classic pink Chanel bag from Spring '06. It is a darling purse. The cloth fabric is printed with iconic designs from the famed French fashion house, featuring mini camellias, perfume bottles, pearls, and the 2.55 (which this bag surely resembles!) The condition is excellent. A perfect addition to your collection!

Pucci & Purple

What a pair! I know the combination of purple and turquoise is a little 80's, but now more than ever is the time to wear bright color.
Labels: marc jacobs, Pucci
Ports Please!

It didn't last long! One lucky regular snapped up Ports' frothy silk frock on Saturday, a mere day after its arrival. You should have seen the smile on her boy's face when she gave him a sneak peak!

Color of the Day: Fuchsia

It is always a pleasure to create new displays in the shop. We try to rearrange them as often as possible, as the merchandise changes daily. So even though The Closet decides what to accept and market, we can never plan exactly what we want in the store, yet there always seem to be a few underlying trends among the items. I know that clashing is a rule of fashion, but The Closet loves to match!

Visvim Sneakers

Here is a small sampling of the Visvim sneakers that we have...the majority are size 9 1/2. As far as I know, this brand is very hard to come by in the States. We have had customers who said they travelled all the way to Japan to get their hands on this stuff!

Oh Oscar

Oscar de la Renta has created quite the confection. Here is a dreamy snow white silk tiered skirt, trimmed with tiny black ribbons and a few feathers. It is so delicate and so lovely.

Doo. Ri Dress!

Doo-Ri Chung is well known in the fashion world for her elegantly draped designs. You may recall she was the winner of the 2006 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award, however it is rare to see one of her creations here at The Closet. Until now! This dress is size 2 and has a delicate sash and beautiful bubble hem.

Pleats Please

I love the idea of a cropped, slightly baggy gaucho pant with a little tank and heels. These two are Marc Jacobs collection, size 2, but they run large. I find t
his photo from The Sartorialist very inspiring. I just hope I can pull them off as well as she does!

Prada Wedge

These are really awesome lightly worn Prada sandals, Sz 39, in multi-colored snakeskin. Don't they remind you of those sweet patchwork bags from the eighties?!
Labels: prada, shoes

The 4th of July is fast approaching so it is time to think about what to wear. Think short, colorful, easy dresses you can take from the beach to a barbeque. I usually find myself in all black ensembles, but a long holiday weekend gives me the perfect excuse to lighten up. I love the Madras line from APC, it actually makes me want to wear plaid! I am also a big fan of this Vanessa Bruno mini dress/jumper in blue linen, her designs are so cool and simple. The Closet is the perfect place to find a festive outfit.

Two gorgeous bias cut Jil Sander dresses. One is a lovely pale yellow, the other black. The best part...the liquid feeling fabric is 100% polyester, so it will not wrinkle! Who knew?!

Dita Shades

Big sunglasses are a major weakness for me. I recently discovered Dita's Opus style (they are huge!) The subtle branding of these shades is appealing as the vintage-inspired frames stand alone in a crowded eyewear world of logos and glitz. They make me feel quite glamorous. We have a pair at The Closet, the Lotus style in brown tortoise, which seem slightly smaller and not as trendy.

Blue & Cream

This color combination is perfect for summer. I love Balenciaga's pure white version of a chic and modern gladiator sandal. The Lanvin slides will work in Beacon Hill or Nantucket. Finally, Ferragamo's white patent tote can take you from the office to the beach. It's nice to have the idea of a clear bag, without the entire world seeing all your stuff!

Marni Top

Marni so cool and easy. There is always a special touch, often a combination of wonderful fabrics and unique patterns, that lead to a totally one of a kind look.

Jelly shoes!
This summer I decided that I am not going to wear flip flops. I hear they are actually a terrible form of footwear, and I hate how dirty my feet become. Perhaps I will bring a pair down to the Cape, but they really don't belong in the city.

These fun plastic jellies ($20 at Aldo) were recommended to me by a trusted shoe connoisseur and friend of The Closet, one who happens to have the best collection of flats that I know. I was a little unsure at first, but my friend was right. They took me from a day wandering the Harbor Islands to dinner back in the city, and I can report that I am blister free and had clean feet when I got home!

Must Try!
I just want to take a moment to remind my fellow shoppers of the importance of trying on a garment, regardless of how it looks on the hanger. Case in point: A couple of weeks ago we received a black silk kimono dress by Lanvin. It had wide dolman sleeves, a big belt, and narrow skirt. I hate to say it, but it looked rather unremarkable. The dress remained on the hanger for a few weeks, NOBODY wanted to try it on! Finally, a smart shopper arrived (from Vermont no less) who was game. It looked AMAZING and went home with her in a matter of minutes. This is a lesson to all of you who have ever looked at a piece of fabric resting carelessly on a plastic frame and thought, "mmmm I don't think so." Please, just try it on. What do you have to lose? The most perfect Lanvin dress is all!

Hogan Bag

This is a great bag, nice muted olive gray color, practical pockets and messenger handle, what's not to like?! I used to feel like Hogan and Tod's were such different brands, but they seem to be playing off each other more and more. This bag is particularly reminiscent of the Tod's bags seen last season. How much of an influence does Derek Lam have on accessories design? I hope a lot!
Labels: handbags, Hogan
Undercover Sneaker
This is the perfect summer sneaker for a boy who likes to be casual, but still stylish. Undercover designer Jun Takahashi debuted this design a few months ago, but they have only recently become available outside Japan. Browns in London is still selling them for full price! Lots more to come...

Labels: sneakers, Undercover
Rebecca Taylor Delivery!

Don't want the girls to be left out! We love Rebecca Taylor for her fine leopard prints, flouncy silk skirts, lovely floral dresses, and all around girly, yet slightly punky attitude towards dressing. I often find her pieces to have a decidedly vintage feel, while remaining relevant for today. She is so hard to resist!

We have this in black too! What you see above is a VERY small selection of what we have received...enjoy!

E2
We recently started to see this label E2 in the shop. It is designed by Michele and Olivier Chatenet who are based in Paris. They are known for taking fine vintage items and reworking them to give each piece (like Hermes, Lanvin, and Chanel) a modern, yet authentic bohemian look. I think it is a neat idea, especially since the updated garments become completely one of a kind. Yesterday we received this...

How fitting!

The Last of Helmut Lang

Here is a dress from the last collection Helmut Lang designed for his label. This dress was shown in white on the Spring/Summer 2005 runway. It is a very straight cut with some interesting braided detail. It is a light cotton which makes it perfect for warm weather. Luckily we don't have to abandon our black just because it is sunny and hot!
Labels: dress, Helmut Lang
Should have bought it...when I saw it!

This is a good rule, especially if you are shopping in a consignment store, where what you see is what you get. Part of the charm of The Closet is that we have only one of each item/only one size, so it is either meant for you or it isn't. This is one reason we choose not to ship. It is also important for shoppers to be able to examine an item in person, since our merchandise has been 'gently worn'. We like to keep it simple! Although online shopping is an increasingly popular method of treasure hunting, there is no substitute for the feeling one gets upon finding a piece that can be enjoyed immediately. Who wants to wait!

Donna Karan Signature

This is classic Donna Karan. The dress is so tiny I could barely fit it on the mannequin!

YSL 1936-2008

I was sad to hear of the death of Mr. Yves Saint Laurent. He was a supremely talented designer who revolutionized the way women dress. His ideas continue to influence the fashion world today. I have to say I was very amused as I listened to a program on NPR earlier today during which Kate Betts is asked something along the lines of whether Mr. Laurent would have taken the Project Runway show seriously...I guess the interviewer didn't know that Mr. Laurent first made his name by winning a design competition in Paris when he was 18! I recommend
The Beautiful Fall by Alicia Drake to those who would like to be entertained and inspired by his amazing creative genius. He is a legend.

Summer is here!

Today was a gorgeous day in Boston and it felt like summer was just around the corner. This means it's time to break out the Pucci, especially since the seasons are so short here in New England. We must take advantage!
Labels: Pucci

The Closet is Boston's finest consignment clothing store for men and women, celebrating over 30 years in business. We are located at 175 Newbury Street between Dartmouth and Exeter.
The Closet accepts designer items (by appointment) that are no more than 1 or 2 years old (with some exceptions of course). Merchandise should be seasonal and in excellent condition. Our consignment period is 60 days, sales are split 50/50, and we mail out checks every month! We are a bit particular about what we accept, so please call 617.536.1919 with questions regarding consignment.
The items displayed may only be purchased in store as it is important to us that you are able to see the item in person. Sorry, but we don't ship!
